Texas freshman Kellen Damico earns second career selection as the Big 12 Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week.
The Big 12 Conference selected Texas freshman Kellen Damico as its Men’s Tennis Player of the Week Monday after Damico scored a pair of singles victories in the Longhorns’ weekend victories over Oklahoma State and Oklahoma.
The 25th-ranked Damico (Parker, Colo.) made short work of Oklahoma State’s 34th-ranked Ivan Puchkarov, winning by a 6-2, 6-0 count in Texas’ 6-1 win over the 23rd-ranked Cowboys on Friday, March 28. Damico completed his weekend conference sweep with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Oklahoma’s Sergey Avdeyev in UT’s 7-0 win over the Sooners on Sunday, March 30.
With his win over OSU’s Puchkarov, Damico recorded his seventh victory over a top-50 singles opponent. Damico also was named the Big 12 Men’s Tennis Player of the Week on March 3.
Damico and the Longhorns resume competition on Thursday, April 3 when they host No. 11 Tulsa at 6 p.m. Central.
UT sophomore Vanja Corovic earns her second career selection as the Big 12 Women’s Tennis Player of the Week.
The Big 12 Conference announced Texas sophomore Vanja Corovic (VON-yuh CHOR-oh-vitch) as its Women’s Tennis Player of the Week Monday after the all-conference standout totaled a 3-0 record and defeated a top-five opponent last week.
Corovic (Belgrade, Serbia) upset Northwestern’s third-ranked Maria Mosolova by a 6-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-1) count in UT’s 5-2 loss to the top-ranked Wildcats on Tuesday, March 25. Corovic improved to 4-0 in Big 12 singles play with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Iowa State’s Kara Hickey and a 6-3, 6-3 win over Nebraska’s Wiveca Swarting in the Longhorns’ victories over the Cyclones and Huskers on March 28 and 29, respectively.
Corovic also tallied a pair of doubles victories alongside junior Marija Milic in UT’s wins over Iowa State and Nebraska. Corovic earned her second career selection as the Big 12 Women’s Tennis Player of the Week.
Corovic and the Longhorns resume competition on Friday, April 4 at Colorado.
