AMES, Iowa – The Texas A&M women’s tennis team completed a successful weekend, capping its two-match road swing with a 6-1 victory over Iowa State today at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center indoor courts.
It marked the Aggies’ fifth consecutive win as they improve to 9-6, including 5-1 in the Big 12 Conference. In addition, they remain undefeated in the all-time series against the Cyclones at 13-0.
ISU drops to 8-7, 1-5.
A&M never trailed at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles en route to clinching the doubles point and jumping out to a 1-0 lead.
Aggie sophomores Morgan Frank (Oldsmar, Fla.) and Christi Liles (Largo, Fla.) began the match by racing to a 5-0 lead against Marie Chartier and Maria Macedo at the No. 2 line. A&M went on to win the match, 8-1, extending the duo’s winning streak to five matches.
Freshman Sheri Olivier (Topeka, Kan.) and Elzé Potgieter (Bloemfontein, South Africa) equaled Frank and Liles’ winning streak and clinched the doubles point for the Aggies by defeating Tessa Lang and Liza Wischer, 8-4, at No. 3. With the win, the Aggie tandem improved to a team-leading 11-2 in dual matches, all at the No. 3 line.
ISU’s Kara Hickey and Erin Karonis prevented the doubles sweep, overcoming a 6-3 deficit to top Janelle Cuthbertson (Perth, Australia) and Stephanie Davidson (Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas), 8-7, winning the tiebreaker, 7-3, at No. 1.
Frank continued her winning ways in singles, notching her team-leading sixth straight victory and improving to 6-0 in Big 12 matches with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Macedo at the No. 2 line, putting the Aggies ahead, 2-0.
Cuthbertson followed with an easy 6-0, 6-2 win over Wischer at No. 5, and for the second consecutive day, Liles provided the clinching win with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Lang at No. 3.
ISU picked up its only point at the No. 4 line, where Chartier held off Lauren Santacroce (Spring, Texas). After splitting the first two sets, Chartier won the super tiebreaker, 10-8.
Potgieter’s match at No. 1 also was decided by a super tiebreaker. She won her first set, 6-3, against Karonis, but Karonis came back to take the second set by the identical score. Potgieter then won the tiebreaker, 10-8, to put the Aggies up, 5-1.
Ashley Turpin (New Braunfels, Texas) capped the match with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Bolan Tarkoe at No. 6.
A&M returns home next weekend to host a pair of Big 12 matches. The Aggies take on Missouri Saturday and then face Colorado on Sunday. Both matches begin at noon at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
