Baylor women cruise to 4-1 win over Texas and Big 12 crown

Bears win fourth straight Big 12 Championship title with 4-1 win over Texas.

NORMAN, Okla. – Baylor’s fifth-ranked women’s tennis team cruised to its fourth-straight Big 12 Conference championship by downing the Texas Longhorns 4-1 on a windy Sunday at the Headington Family Tennis Center on the University of Oklahoma campus.

All four of Baylor’s Big 12 Championship titles have come over Texas and the victory was Baylor’s 41st consecutive over league opponents and extended its win streak 18 matches. With the win, the Bears raised their season record to 24-4 while Texas falls to 16-7.

After posting three straight-sets singles wins and a doubles triumph throughout the three days of competition, junior Csilla Borsanyi was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.

“I am proud of the way we played today. Texas played tough today, they competed very, very hard and they handled the wind well today. Both teams played a good match and thankfully we came out of top,” said head coach Joey Scrivano. When asked about the dominance of the program of late, Scrivano replied, “It’s been a lot of hard work and it all starts with our athletes, coaching staff and our staff in general. We are very committed to excellence and I couldn’t be more proud of what we’ve done over the last seven years and today was another example of a lot of hard work we’ve put in.”

For the second day in a row, freshman Nina Secerbegovic was the first Baylor player off the court. She downed UT’s Amanda Craddock, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. The victory extended her win streak to 18 matches. The Longhorns gained their only point when 116th-ranked Vanja Corovic downed 39th-ranked Taylor Ormond at the top spot, 6-3, 6-2. Juniors Lenka Broosova and Borsanyi gained the Bears their final points when Broosova downed Krista Damico, 6-0, 6-1 and Borsanyi defeated Caroline Larsson, 6-3, 6-1. Borsanyi netter her 16th straight victory while Broosova extended her win streak to 15 matches.

The Bears dominated doubles play as well, winning the point with victories at No.2 and 3 doubles respectively. Freshmen Kasia Siwosz and Secerbegovic were the first tandem were the first tandem off the court with an 8-5 win over Stephanie Davison and Larsson. Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk secured the doubles point with an 8-6 win over Damico and Craddock.
