Owl Women Set to Host Rice Tennis Classic

Tournament slated Friday-Sunday at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium
After opening the fall season last week on the road, the Rice women’s tennis team plays host to the 2009 Rice Tennis Classic Friday through Sunday at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
The Tournament field includes Conference USA rivals SMU and Tulane along with DePaul, LSU, Oklahoma, Sam Houston State, Texas, Texas-Arlington, Texas-San Antonio and Texas State.
Tournament play is set to begin at 8:30 a.m. each day with doubles championships decided Saturday morning and seven flights of singles championships to be played Sunday morning.
Varsha Shiva Shankar and Becca Linn advanced to the semifinals of their doubles flight last week at the Midland Invitational last week. This week the tandem will be paired with different partners when doubles play kicks off the tournament Friday morning. Linn will team up with Rebekka Hanle in the Flight One Doubles draw while Shiva Shankar and Julie Chao will play in the Flight Two Doubles draw.
Hanle will play in the Flight One Singles draw and opens tournament play against Texas-Arlington’s Maria Romero Martinez.

Like I wrote yesterday, I am pretty much resigned to posting press releases on the Fall tournaments this weekend. Below you will find the Rice Classic draws and their press release. The first couple of singles flights looks pretty good. As for the weather, it still looks like the tournaments will get in, but the rain has lingered a little longer than expected. ugh.
