Along with his strong singles showing, Rux is part of the only remaining Baylor doubles pairing with sophomore Maros Horny.
The pair will play tomorrow in the doubles A draw final against Gonzalo Escobar and Andre Stabile of Texas Tech. The Red Raider duo knocked off the No. 1 seeded doubles duo of Moritz Baumann and Marek Michalicka of Wisconsin in the semifinal round. The Baylor pairing is ranked 25th in preseason ITA rankings.
“The great thing about a tournament like this is you get to play a lot of matches and see what you need to work on,” tennis coach Matt Knoll said. “We have had some guys play some good matches and then some that weren’t so good and those are the ups and downs of sport. We have to be able to sustain some better mental energy and better intensity then we did in matches this weekend.”
The Bears’ players were 5-3 on the day with a 3-3 singles record and 2-0 doubles record.
“It is a great start to the year,” Knoll said. “It is great to get out and play so much tennis in a short amount of time. I know it is helping us a ton.”
In doubles action starting at 8:30 a.m. at the Baylor Tennis Center, Rux and Horny, the third-seeded doubles squad did just enough to get past Michael Dierberger and Patrick Pohlmann of Wisconsin 9-8 with a 10-3 win in the tiebreaker. The Bears pair followed that with an 8-6 win over Aleksey Bessonov and Oleksandr Nedovyesov of Oklahoma State in the semifinals of the doubles A draw to advance to Sunday’s final.
“Jordan and Maros understand and know how to play doubles,” Knoll said. “They know what their job is out there. There is a little bit of a rust factor, because they have not played a lot of doubles over the summer. They are really learning how to get the most out of each other. Their communication has really improved and they are starting to have a pretty good time out there.”
Between his doubles success, Rux was able to capture victories in his round of 16 singles match over Isamu Tachibana of Rice 6-2, 6-2. He followed that win with another straight sets success over Matt Brewer of Tennessee 6-2, 6-2. Baylor’s other player in the main draw of singles A, the 10th-seeded Attila Bucko, was also successful in his round of 16 match taking down Patrick Pohlmann of Wisconsin 6-1, 6-1. In Bucko’s quarterfinal match, he battled back from an opening set loss, 7-5, to take the second set 6-3, before dropping the third set and the match 6-4 to the 14th-seeded Anton Bobytskyi of Oklahoma State.
Rux will now face Oleksandr Nedovyesov of Oklahoma State at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow in the A draw singles’ semifinals. The Cowboy is the No. 1 seed in the tournament and the No. 1 ranked player in the ITA preseason rankings. Rux is the fourth seed in the tournament and the 27th-ranked player in preseason rankings.
“I know Jordan (Rux) is excited to get to play the No. 1 player in the country,” Knoll said. “Hopefully he can take advantage of the opportunity. Oleksandr (Nedovyesov) serves the ball very well and he is an unbelievable athlete. Jordan will have to return the ball well, he will have to be aggressive on offense and just execute.”
In consolation action in the singles A draw 12th-seeded Julian Bley fell in three sets to Jim Brouleau of New Mexico State University 4-6, 6-0, 1-0(9). The tiebreaker loss ousted the sophomore Bley from the tournament.
In consolation action in the singles B draw Chris Gordon fell to Eldad Campbell of Abilene Christian 6-1, 6-2 to eliminate him from the tournament.
