Topeka, Kan. – The St. Edward’s women’s tennis team traveled to Washburn University to compete in the ITA South Central Region Women’s Tennis Tournament for their first tournament of the fall season.
In singles action, the Hilltoppers had split results as freshmen Paige Rachel and sophomore Audrey Tompkins passed the first two rounds to contend in the Round of 16 on Saturday. Rachel won her first round match against Audrey Hernandez of Incarnate Word, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. She continued her strong play with a victory over Monika Graff, 6-4, 1-6, 6-0. Tompkins had an easier time with her opponents defeating Alyssa Castillo of Washburn University, 6-0, 6-3. In the second round she defeated Carole Julen of Tarleton in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. Senior Elizabeth Jacobi fell to Elizabeta Abramovic of Central Oklahoma in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Sophomore Heather Brien lost to Abilene Christian’s Julia Mongin, 6-3, 7-5.
On the doubles side, the Hilltoppers made an impressive run with both pairs advancing past the first round on Friday. Thompkins and Rachel formed a strong team as they defeated UCO’s Julia Shviadok and Abramovic, 6-4, 6-1. The team continued their run in the second round defeating Erica Engberg and Alex Adams of UIW, 6-4, 6-3. The Hilltopper duo of Brien and Jacobi defeated Emporia State’s Talena Larren and Kristen Ford, 6-1, 6-3 in the first round. The team was defeated in the second round by ACU’s Dina Pavlin and Jaclyn Walker, 6-3, 6-4.
The Hilltopper women’s team will continue to play in the regional at Topeka on Saturday. Tompkins and Rachel will vie in the singles draw in the Round of 16 as well as in the doubles side in the quarterfinals.
