TOPEKA, Kan. – The Hilltopper women’s tennis team competed in day two of the ITA South Central Regional tournament Saturday. Freshmen Paige Rachel and sophomore Audrey Tompkins would lead the Hilltoppers in both singles and doubles action.
On the single’s side, Rachel was defeated in the round of 16 by the number one seed and eventual champion, Julia Arguello of East Central University, 6-3, 6-1. Tompkins was able to advance past the round of 16 by defeating Laryssa Ferreira of Newman, 7-5, 1-6, 6-4. In the round of 8, Tompkins was defeated by Zuzanna Osinska of Northeastern State, 6-1, 6-3.
Following the tough singles play faced by the Hilltopper players, Rachel and Tompkins quickly regrouped to join in doubles action. The duo of Tompkins and Rachel passed through to the final four by defeating the team of Mongin and Carver of Abilene Christian, 6-3, 6-3. The team was defeated in the proceeding round of 4 by the team of Osinska and Spintovic of Northeastern State, 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-1).
