Iowa, no match for Baylor, falls 7-0

With the temperature hovering in the 30s, the sixth-ranked men’s tennis team was able to sweep No. 58 Iowa 7-0 at the Baylor Tennis Center on Sunday. The win propels the Bears into tomorrow’s ITA Kick-Off Weekend championship match where they will face 38th-ranked TCU.

“You have to know what you are getting into when you walk out there on a day like today,” head coach Matt Knoll said. “It is not going to be a beauty contest. You just can’t play your best tennis. The ball doesn’t move. The strings aren’t lively. It is a different game. I thought our guys did a good job. We came out and managed it. To win 7-0 is great.”

Baylor opened the afternoon in doubles with Denes Lukacs and Maros Horny claiming an 8-5 victory over Marc Bruche and Nikita Zotov at the No. 1 spot. Attila Bucko and Sergio Ramirez then took down Tommy McGeorge and Will Vasos 8-6 to give the Bears the point.

“I feel like we only have one team that we feel pretty good about as a team and that is Horny and Lukacs,” Knoll said. “We are still looking around trying to figure out what else we are going to do, but I thought everybody did a good job and made it work.”

In singles, the coaches agreed to complete all of the matches instead of stopping at four points when the match is decided.

“I think early in the season, you just need matches and I think the dynamic of finishing a match is different than just playing a little bit and stopping,” Knoll said of the decision to play the matches out.

The Bears continued to roll in singles as Lukacs was the first Baylor player to put a singles point on the board with a 6-3, 6-4 win over former Bear Bruche.

“I think it is always a little awkward to play a guy, when you were on his team the year before,” Knoll said. “I thought Denes did a great job of managing it and keeping it from being complicated and got through it in two sets. I think if you ask Denes he wouldn’t say he felt great about the way he played, but it was a nice workman like effort and that is what you needed today.”

Baylor got its third point when Dominik Mueller clinched the 99th singles match and the 75th dual match of his career with a 6-1, 6-0 win over McGeorge. The Bears’ fourth and match clinching point came from Maros Horny at the No. 6 spot as he beat Austen Kauss 6-1, 6-4.

After the match was decided the 11th-ranked Rux took down Zotov 6-3, 6-2, Ramirez beat Vasos 6-3, 4-6, 1-0(10-8) and Bucko got past Reinoud Haal 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7).

The win moves the Bears record to 3-0 and drops the Hawkeyes to 0-1. The win also gives the Bears a 1-0 advantage in the all-time series.

Baylor will now face 38th-ranked TCU on Monday at 3 p.m. The Horned Frogs are 3-0 on the season after beating No. 66 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sunday, 4-0 in their first match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.

Iowa and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will have a consolation match at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the Baylor Tennis Center.
