Texas women single out Princeton, 6-1

Horns sweep the six singles matches in the victory over the Tigers.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – No. 16 Texas (2-1) dropped the doubles point but swept the six singles matches en route to a 6-1 victory over Princeton on Sunday in the Horns’ second match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at Florida State’s Speicher Tennis Facility.

Texas surrendered two of the three doubles matches and yielded the doubles point, but the Longhorns rebounded in the singles session and seized control of the match. Junior Krista Damico put Texas on the board at second singles with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Princeton’s Taylor Marable. UT took the lead for good at fifth singles, where freshman Juliana Gajic posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over Katherine Flanigan.

Texas commanded a 3-1 lead with a win at third singles, where senior Maggie Mello knocked off Rachel Saiontz by a 6-4, 6-4 count. The Horns would clinch the match at sixth singles, where freshman Elizabeth Begley rallied from a set down to defeat Blakely Ashley, 0-6, 7-5, 6-1.

UT senior Amanda Craddock tacked on to the Texas lead with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Monica Chow at fourth singles. Texas sophomore Aeriel Ellis finished off the Longhorns’ victory at first singles with a third-set match tiebreak win over Princeton’s Hilary Bartlett.

Texas resumes dual-match play on Saturday, Feb. 12 when it travels to southern California to take on Pepperdine.
