Horns get the doubles point and victories from Amanda Craddock and Juliana Gajic.
AUSTIN – Texas (4-3) took the doubles point and collected singles wins from senior Amanda Craddock and freshman Juliana Gajic in a 4-3 victory over Arizona State Sunday afternoon at UT’s Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
With Arizona State only able to field two doubles teams with five available student-athletes, Texas needed to win one of the two doubles matches to secure the doubles point. The Sun Devils posted a win at second doubles, but Texas picked up the victory at the first slot, as Craddock and freshman Cierra Gaytan-Leach posted an 8-6 win over Jacqueline Cako and Micaela Hein. The match at third doubles was defaulted in Texas’ favor due to Arizona State’s incomplete lineup.
Texas, who was sporting pink shirts and shoes in support of the fight against breast cancer, immediately assumed a 2-0 lead given that the match at the sixth slot was defaulted to Texas by way of the Sun Devils’ incomplete lineup. Arizona State’s Cako put the Sun Devils on the board at first singles before Gajic pushed the Texas lead to 3-1 with a 6-0, 6-1 win over ASU’s Sianna Simmons.
Texas’ Craddock finished the day with a spotless singles and doubles record and clinched the Texas victory at fourth singles. Craddock took the first set off of ASU’s Ashlee Brown and trailed 4-3 in the second set before breaking Brown’s serve and taking the next three games to win the match, 6-3, 6-4. Arizona State claimed the remaining two matches in straight sets.
Texas resumes play next weekend and will head to the Midwest to take on Northwestern and Illinois.

On the team wearing pink to support the fight against breast cancer
“It’s a reminder for us of what so many women are going through. They’re fighting against all odds. It’s a cause that is near and dear to our hearts, and we were very proud to wear pink and do our part.”
On the match
“We saw Amanda Craddock get the clinching match for us. She is a senior captain, and she had one of our freshmen, Juliana Gajic, playing next to her today. Juliana has had a great run so far this year. We’ve been playing some good doubles at No. 1 with Cierra Gaytan-Leach and Amanda Craddock. They have been on a tear lately.”
