No. 4 Texas overpowers Oklahoma State, 6-1

Longhorns take the doubles point and win five of six singles matches against the Cowboys.

STILLWATER, Okla. – No. 4 Texas (14-5, 1-1 Big 12) took the doubles point and claimed five of six singles matches in a 6-1 win over Oklahoma State (3-8, 0-2 Big 12) Sunday afternoon at the DeBois Tennis Complex.

UT opened the match with a win at first doubles, where Ed Corrie and Jean Andersen dealt OSU’s 13th-ranked tandem of Aleksey Bessonov and Rifat Biktyanov an 8-4 defeat. UT clinched the doubles point at the third slot, where Vasko Mladenov and Daniel Whitehead held off OSU’s Vlad Bondarenko and Tomas Patino by a 9-7 count. OSU took the remaining match at second doubles.

Texas cruised to victory in the singles session with victories in five of six matches. Damico overpowered Bondarenko by a 6-1, 6-2 count at second singles, and Andersen went on to post a 6-1, 7-5 win over Bessonov at third singles. Mladenov clinched the victory for the Longhorns at fourth singles, where he dealt Eric West a 6-4, 6-3 defeat.

OSU picked up a win at first singles, but UT’s Whitehead answered with a win at fifth singles, where Ilija Martinoski retired in the second set. UT freshman Sudanwa Sitaram finished off the victory for the Horns at sixth singles, where he finished off Patino, 6-4, 6-7 (6), 1-0 (10-4).

Texas resumes play on Saturday, April 2 when it hosts Rice.
