TCU Marches on to MWC Semis With 4-0 Win

Frogs made quick work in doubles, picked up three singles wins

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The second-seeded TCU men’s tennis team rolled into the semifinal round of the Mountain West Men’s Tennis Championship on Wednesday with a 4-0 triumph over Air Force at the University Tennis Complex.

Battling blustery conditions, the No. 57-ranked Horned Frogs improved to 12-12 on the season and will face No. 3-seeded New Mexico in their semifinal match. The Lobos were 4-0 winners over Utah on Wednesday.

“I loved the way the guys came out of the gates playing the doubles,” TCU coach David Roditi said. “As a coach, my No. 1 job is that the guys are ready to play. That was probably the fastestdoubles point we’ve won all year. It was a great sign the guys were ready to make a statement here.

TCU jumped on the Falcons early in the match, scoring two quick doubles wins to clinch the doubles point. PaulChappell and Cameron Nash struck first for the Purple and White, knocking off Air Force’s Alex Grubbs and Taylor Soster, 8-1, at No. 2 doubles.

Zach Nichols and Daniel Sanchez followed suit for the Frogs, picking up an 8-4 win over Alex Beasussart andSteven Young at the third doubles spot. No. 48 Emanuel Brighiu and Christopher Price’s match at No. 1 doubles was unfinished after TCU clinched the match.

Price made it 2-0 in favor of the Frogs when Taylor Soster retired while trailing 5-0 at No. 3 singles. The Houston, Texas native has yet to drop a match to an MWC opponent this spring.

The third point for TCU came from the services of Nichols at No. 2 singles. He was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over Andy Jackson. Nichols improved his season mark to 13-10.

Slah Mbarek put it away for TCU at No. 4 singles with his 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Grubbs. The win was Mbarek’s second in a row.

The Frogs led in the remaining three matches in action that were called to a halt after Mbarek’s win scored the fourth point for TCU.

TCU’s will return to action Friday at the MWC Men’s Tennis Championship in its semifinal match with New Mexico. First serve is set for 3 p.m., CT. In their regular-season matchup, TCU took down the Lobos, 5-2.
