Baylor Women Move on to Big 12 Semifinals

Lady Bears post 4-2 victory over Oklahoma State

WACO – Baylor’s women’s tennis team extended its win streak to 13 matches with its 4-2 victory over Oklahoma State in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championships at Baylor’s Tennis Center in Waco on Friday evening.

Baylor, the tournament’s top-seeded team, claimed the victory over the ninth-seeded Cowgirls. Oklahoma State won the doubles point but the Lady Bears rallied to post victories at the top three singles spots and on court six to secure the win.

The victory raised Baylor’s season record to 23-3 while OSU falls to 8-16. With the win, Baylor advances to the tournament semifinals for the eighth straight season and 11th time overall. The Lady Bears will meet Texas A&M in one semifinal while Texas and Oklahoma meet in the other matchup. Both contests will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

“Anytime you win easily, bad habits creep in. Oklahoma State definitely forced us to play some of our best tennis and that is a positive. When you’re in the post-season you want to be playing your best tennis and they definitely pushed us. They’ve had this kind of season all year where they’ve pushed really good teams but aren’t able to close it out. Thankfully, we came through tonight,” said head coach Joey Scrivano.

For the first time this season, Baylor lost the doubles point against an unranked opponent. Oklahoma State claimed doubles wins at courts one and two. The BU tandem of Diana Nakic and Sona Novakova were finished first with an 8-4 win over on court three over OSU’s CC Sardinha and Leyla Simmons. On court two, OSU’s Sasha Belova and Malika Rose picked up a win over Taylor Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk, 8-6, to even it up. After trailing 2-5, Karolina Filipiak and Nina Secerbegovic rallied on court one and got within 6-7 before eventually falling to Nataliya Shatkovskaya and Kanyapat Narattana , 8-6.

Playing at No. 3 singles, Secerbegovic downed Sardinha, 6-3, 6-0, to claim Baylor’s first point of the match. On court one, Novakova posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Shatkovskaya before OSU’s Narattana evened the match a 2-2 with a win over Filipiak (6-1, 6-2) on court five. Nadic earned Baylor’s third point with a win at No. 2, a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Belova and Taylor Ormond, playing on court six, clinched the win for the Lady Bears with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory over Sarah Meghoufel.

“It was great that T.O. (Taylor Ormond) clinched the winning point. She hasn’t had the opportunity to close out a lot of matches so that should give her a lot of confidence. Meghoufel is a good player and to beat her is going to be good. I’m really proud of T.O,” said Scrivano.

In the only unfinished match of the contest, BU’s Stanivuk rallied from a 0-4 first-set deficit to claim a 7-6 (2) win, she was leading 4-3 in the second set when play was suspended.
