Hilltoppers win “Battle of the Saints” matchup, 6-2 (women)

AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward’s women’s tennis team beat conference foe St. Mary’s 6-2, Saturday afternoon at the Strohmeyer Varsity Tennis Courts. This win brings the team back over five hundred on the season giving them a 3-2 record.

The Hilltopper’s started off on the right foot this gaining a 2-1 lead after doubles play was all said and done. St. Edward’s senior pair, Audrey Tompkins (Katy, Texas/Taylor HS) and Mary Bain (Austin, Texas/Westlake HS), defeated St. Mary’s Lambrechts and Gonzalez, 8-4. The second point won by the Hilltoppers came from Paige Rachel (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch HS) and Rafaela Haegele (Schwieberdingen, Germany/Otto-Hahn Gymnasium) who were able to fend off the Rattlers duo of De Oliveri and Huynh winning their match, 9-7.

The Hilltopper success rolled over into singles play were they captured three-straight points to gain a victory. Tompkins finished her match first gaining a 6-2, 6-2 victory over her opponent. Then Rachel won the next point for the Hilltoppers, defeating St. Mary’s De Oliveri, 6-2, 6-2. Haegele scored the fifth point for St. Edward’s by defeating Cooper 6-3, 6-0, and securing the victory for the Hilltopper’s.

Senior Mary Bain grabbed the sixth point for the Hilltopper’s winning her match 6-2, 6-1. However Alexandra Khadzhyan (Murmansk, Russia/Murmansck Secondary) took the first set of her match 6-0 before dropping the second 6-4. After battling back and forth with St. Mary’s Lambrechts in the thrid set, Khadzhyan eventually lost her marathon of a match in a third set tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5). Also, the match between Heather Brien (College Station, Texas/A&M-Consolidated) of St. Edward’s and Elisha Byant of St. Mary’s was ended early due to darkness. Byrant took the first set 6-4 and Brien was up 3-0 in the second before their contest was called.

St. Edward’s will return to action Monday, taking a road trip to Stephenville to face off against Tarleton State. First serve is scheduled for 1:00 p.m at the Tarleton tennis complex.
