St. Edward’s women drop home match to Florida Southern, 6-3

AUSTIN – The St. Edward’s Women Tennis team was up bright and early for its match against Florida Southern Saturday morning at the Strohmeyer Varsity Tennis Courts. The Hilltoppers gave it all they had but were ultimately outplayed by the eventual winner Florida Southern, 6-3. The Hilltoppers have now lost their last two matches.

St. Edward’s (8-6) gained one of its three points from the outstanding duo of Paige Rachel (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch HS) and Rafaela Haegele (Scheneberdigen, Germany/Otto-Hahn Gymnasium). Rachel and Haegele continue their win streak to four matches after defeating Florida Southern’s Joalis Dominguez and Laura Wichmann 9-8, in a back and forth battle at No. 2 doubles.

Two Hilltoppers were able to win their matches and earn a point for St. Edward’s during singles play. Haegele won her match at No. 4 singles 6-2, 6-0 against Christie Nunnemann, and ties teammate Audrey Tompkins (Katy, Texas/Taylor HS) for a team best nine wins on the season. Heather Brien (College Station, Texas/A&M-Consolidated) won the third point for the Hilltoppers by overcoming a one-set deficit after the first set to beat Crystal Copeland 2-6, 6-4, 11-9, in three sets. This win brings Brien to a 6-4 record on the season.

The Hilltoppers will compete in their next match Monday at home against Willamette University. First Serve is set for 2:00 p.m.
