AUSTIN – The St. Edward’s women tennis team earned its ninth win of the season Monday afternoon by defeating Willamette, 9-0 at the Strohmeyer Varsity Tennis Courts. The Hilltoppers now have three shutouts on the season.
The outstanding duo of Paige Rachel (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch HS) and Rafaela Haegele (Scheneberdigen, Germany/Otto-Hahn Gymnasium) extend their win streak to five straight by defeating Denise Poltavski and Emily Bee 8-2, at No. 2 doubles for the Hilltoppers. Audrey Tompkins (Katy, Texas/Taylor HS) and Alexandra Khadzhyan (Murmansk, Russia/Murmansck Secondary) also scored a point for St. Edward’s (9-6) by winning their match, 8-2, at No. 1 doubles over Willamette’s Sabrina Gutierrez and Shannon Palmer. The Hilltoppers would also take the No. 3 doubles match featuring Mary Bain (Austin, Texas/Westlake HS) and Francesca Chohor (Balneario Camboriu, Brazil/Colegio Unificado). The Hilltoppers pair would win 8-0 over Elise Derby and Emily Funabiki of Willamette University.
St. Edward’s Dominance would roll over into singles play where all six Hilltoppers would win their match. At No. 1 singles Alexandra Khadzhyan would cruise past Shannon Palmer, 6-2, 6-1, while junior Paige Rachel coasted by Denise Poltavski, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2 singles. In the No. 3 slot senior Audrey Tompkins defeated Sabrina Gutierrez, 6-1, 6-1, earning her 10th victory of the year. Also, Rafaela Haegele earned her 10th win of the season Monday by shutting out Emily Bee 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4 singles. Freshman Francesca Chohor won her match, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 5 singles by taking down Emily Funabiki of Willamette University. Lastly, at No. 6 singles, the senior Heather Brien (College Station, Texas/A&M-Consolidated) defeated Elise Derby 6-1, 6-0.
The Hilltoppers will travel to the Sunshine State to take on Nova Southeastern in Melbourne, Florida Friday. First serve is set for 10:00 a.m.
