TexasCollegeTennis.com National Rankings 2-25-14

(updated on 2-25 at 930pm thanks to a reader who brought two missing teams to my attention… I am sure there are more)

Here are the updated TexasCollegeTennis.ocm Men’s Rankings as of matches played by Sunday (February 23)  and recorded by 8:00 am February 25. This is key. Several people have indicated that their records do not reflect their results. Unfortunately, in each and every case, those missing scores have to been reported to the ITA website.

Again, several schools may be included that are NOT playing or who have NOT entered any matches. A few may be playing that for one reason or another I have omitted from my start file. Please let me know. (sixmanguru at gmail dot com is the easiest way to reach me)

I have had several questions about how the rankings are derived. I won’t go into much detail, but refer you to a website or two to help explain if you have more questions.

The basic concept comes from the ELO Chess Rating System (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elo_rating_system). I evaluate it this way.

Each team starts with a generic rating. I start with them in groups with the same rating. Then, when two teams play, you take the difference in the rating and determine a probability of what the result should be. You compare that with what actually happened (one team won, one lost)… and then adjust the ratings accordingly. You do this recursively (over and over).

So basically, I run through the season in order, over and over continually adjusting the ratings, until you reach some sort of equilibrium (or as close to that as you can). Not sure that helped. Hope it did.
